Yellow Pea Microgreens and Sprouts

Organic Garden Yellow Pea microgreens are young, tender pea shoots that are packed with nutrients and are easy to grow in a small space. Here are the materials and steps you will need to grow Organic Garden Yellow Pea microgreens:

Historically, yellow peas have been an important source of nutrition for people all over the world. They were a staple food in ancient Egypt and Greece, and were also commonly consumed by the Vikings and other European cultures during the Middle Ages. During times of famine or scarcity, yellow peas were often used as a substitute for meat, and were even used as a form of currency in some parts of Europe.

How to Grow Microgreens:

To grow yellow pea microgreens, you will need the following materials:
  • Yellow pea seeds
  • A shallow tray or container
  • Potting soil or a seedling mix
  • Water
  • A spray bottle
  • A sunny location or grow light
Here are the steps to grow yellow pea microgreens and sprouts (skip to the bottom to see how to grow sprouts):
  1. Soak the yellow pea seeds in water for at least 8 hours or overnight. This will help to speed up the germination process.
  2. Fill a shallow tray or container with potting soil or a seedling mix. Make sure the soil is evenly moist but not too wet.
  3. Sprinkle the soaked yellow pea seeds evenly over the surface of the soil. Gently press the seeds into the soil to ensure good contact.
  4. Cover the tray or container with a lid or plastic wrap to help keep the soil moist.
  5. Place the tray or container in a sunny location or under a grow light. Yellow pea seeds need light to germinate, so make sure they are exposed to plenty of light.
  6. Keep the soil moist by misting it with a spray bottle regularly.
  7. After a few days, the yellow pea seeds will start to sprout. Once they have developed their first true leaves, they are ready to be harvested as microgreens.
  8. To harvest, simply snip the microgreens with a pair of scissors just above the soil line.
Yellow peas have also been used for medicinal purposes throughout history. In traditional Chinese medicine, yellow peas were used to treat digestive disorders such as bloating, constipation, and diarrhea. They were also used to strengthen the spleen and promote overall digestive health. Yellow peas have also been used as a natural diuretic, as well as to treat respiratory conditions such as coughs and bronchitis. The high fiber content in yellow peas has been shown to have cholesterol-lowering effects, making them beneficial for heart health. Additionally, the iron and zinc found in yellow peas can help boost the immune system and improve overall health.

How to Grow Sprouts:

To grow yellow pea sprouts in a jar, you will need the following materials:

Materials:

Yellow pea seeds
A glass jar with a wide mouth (such as a mason jar)
A mesh or cheesecloth
A rubber band
Water
Steps:

Rinse the yellow pea seeds in water and remove any debris or broken seeds.
Soak the seeds in water overnight (for about 8-12 hours).
Drain the water and rinse the seeds again.
Cover the mouth of the jar with a piece of mesh or cheesecloth and secure it with a rubber band.
Add the soaked seeds to the jar. The seeds should take up no more than one-fifth of the jar.
Add water to the jar, about halfway up the seeds.
Swirl the jar gently to make sure all the seeds are wet.
Pour out any excess water.
Place the jar in a spot out of direct sunlight but where it can still get some light and air circulation.
Rinse the seeds with fresh water twice a day, making sure to drain out all excess water each time.
After a few days, the seeds should start to sprout. Continue to rinse them twice a day until they reach the desired length (usually 3-5 days).
Once the sprouts have reached the desired length, remove them from the jar and rinse them thoroughly to remove any seed hulls or debris.
Store the sprouts in a container in the refrigerator, where they should last for several days. Enjoy!
