These Pellets are made of sterile peat growing medium, enclosed in a de-composable net. This net biodegrades in garden soil or compost, but it retains strength through the critical seedling and transplant stages. No pot is needed, and the growing medium offers great aeration and water retention. Speed and degree of decomposition will vary with soil or compost conditions. Each 3/4″ thick compressed Jiffy peat pellet expands to a 2″ diameter (50 mm) x 3-1/4″ tall cylinder , ideal for larger vegetable transplants. Promotes great root development.
Peat Pellets are a convenient and effective way to start seeds for gardening. Here are the steps to successfully grow seeds in Peat Pellets:
Soak the pellets: Place the Peat Pellets in a tray or container and pour warm water over them. Allow the pellets to absorb water and expand for about 5 to 10 minutes until they expand to full size. Make sure the netting has not shifted over the top of the plug. If so, take a pencil and pull the netting over to the edge.
Sow the seeds: Once the pellets have expanded, use your finger or a small tool, such as a pencil, to make a small hole in the center of each pellet. Place one or two seeds in each hole and gently cover them with peat.
Provide warmth: Keep the pellets in a warm and well-lit area, ideally with a temperature of around 70 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit. You can use a heat mat or a grow lamp to provide consistent warmth to the seeds. Add a marker in order to identify the seeds.
Water regularly: Keep the pellets moist but not soaked. Basically water them when they start to look dry. You can use a spray bottle to mist the pellets daily or water them from the bottom by filling the tray with water and allowing the pellets to absorb the water.
Transplant seedlings: Once the seedlings have “true” leaves showing, they will need to receive at least 6 hours of direct sunlight. When the seedlings have grown to a few inches in height they will be ready to transplant into a larger pot. Gently plant the whole peat pellet and seedling in the desired pot.
Planting outside: After the temperature stays above freezing overnight, and your plants have a stocky healthy growth, they will be ready to move outside. You will want to gently acclimate your plants to the outdoors climate by at first putting them in a shady area and cover them at night, or bring them in at night, if the temperature should get near freezing. Gradually increase the amount of time they spend outside and the amount of sunlight they receive until you see they are growing strong and appear to be ready to stay outside on their own.
When transplanting: Water your seedlings well before and after you transplant them. Don’t transplant them during midday, as it is the hottest part of the day and can damage the young plants.
Overall, Peat Pellets offer an easy and convenient method for starting seeds, with the added benefit of being biodegradable and environmentally friendly.
