BASIL – GENOVESE

Basil is a versatile herb with many potential health benefits. It can be consumed fresh, dried, or in supplement form, and is a great addition to many different dishes.

To grow Genovese Basil, you will need the following:

Materials:

      • Genovese Basil seeds
      • Garden soil or potting soil
      • A trowel or shovel
      • A watering can or hose with a gentle sprayer attachment
      • Optional: organic fertilizer

Steps:

      1. Choose a sunny location with well-draining soil. Basil loves warmth and sun, so select a location with at least 6 hours of sunlight per day. The soil should be loose and well-draining to prevent waterlogging and root rot.
      2. Prepare the soil. Using a trowel or shovel, loosen the soil to a depth of about 8 inches. Add some organic fertilizer to the soil to provide the nutrients needed for healthy growth.
      3. Sow the seeds. Sow the basil seeds 1/4 inch deep into the soil, spacing the seeds about 6-8 inches apart. Cover the seeds lightly with soil and gently press down the soil to ensure good seed-to-soil contact.
      4. Water the seeds. Using a gentle sprayer attachment, water the soil well but not excessively, making sure not to wash away the seeds. Keep the soil moist until the seeds germinate, which usually takes around 7 to 10 days.
      5. Thin the seedlings. Once the seedlings have grown to around 2 inches tall, thin them to one plant per 6-8 inches of space. This ensures that the plants have enough room to grow and develop. You can use scissors to snip off the extra seedlings at the soil line.
      6. Provide proper care. Basil plants need to be well-watered, but not excessively, as over-watering can lead to root rot. It is best to water basil plants once or twice a week, and more often in hot weather. Ensure that the soil is moist but not waterlogged. Fertilize the plants with organic fertilizer once a month to provide nutrients needed for healthy growth.
    • Harvest the basil. The leaves of the basil plant can be harvested when the plant reaches a height of 6 to 8 inches. To harvest, snip off the leaves with sharp scissors or pruning shears, taking care not to damage the stem or any nearby leaves. You can also pinch off the top two sets of leaves to encourage bushier growth.
