American Lotus (Nelumbo lutea)

American Lotus (Nelumbo lutea), also known as Yellow Lotus or Water-Chinquapin, is a striking aquatic plant native to North America.

Additional information

It is characterized by its large, round leaves that can reach up to two feet in diameter, and magnificent, fragrant flowers that bloom from late spring to early fall. The flowers are typically a vibrant yellow hue and can be as large as eight inches in diameter. American Lotus grows in shallow freshwater habitats such as ponds, lakes, and slow-moving streams, where its long stems anchor in the mud while its leaves and flowers float gracefully on the water’s surface.

Interesting and Historical Information:

  • American Lotus has been a significant plant in Native American cultures, where it held spiritual and medicinal importance. Tribes utilized various parts of the plant for food, medicine, and ceremonial purposes.
  • The plant has also been admired for its beauty and symbolism in various cultures throughout history. Its unique ability to emerge from muddy waters and produce pristine flowers has led to its association with purity, enlightenment, and rebirth in many Eastern philosophies.
  • American Lotus was a favorite subject of American naturalist and artist John James Audubon, who depicted the plant in his renowned bird illustrations.

Fun Facts:

  1. American Lotus is not just a pretty face; its seeds are edible and have been consumed by indigenous peoples for centuries. They have a nutty flavor and can be eaten raw, roasted, or ground into flour for baking.
  2. Despite its name, American Lotus is not closely related to the true lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) native to Asia and Africa. They belong to different plant families but share similar characteristics due to convergent evolution.
  3. The leaves of American Lotus are hydrophobic, meaning they repel water, which helps keep them clean and dry even when submerged.

Growing and Harvesting American Lotus:

Materials Needed:

  • American Lotus seeds
  • Shallow container or pond
  • Rich, loamy soil
  • Fertilizer (optional)
  • Water

Steps:

  1. Seed Preparation: American Lotus seeds have tough outer coats that need to be scarified before planting to aid in germination. This can be done by gently filing or nicking the seed coat with a small knife or sandpaper, being careful not to damage the inner seed.
  2. Planting: Fill a shallow container or prepare a suitable area in a pond with rich, loamy soil. Plant the scarified seeds about 1-2 inches deep in the soil, ensuring they are spaced at least 2-3 feet apart to allow for adequate growth.
  3. Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. If growing in a pond, ensure the water level allows the seeds to remain submerged.
  4. Maintenance: Once established, American Lotus plants require minimal maintenance. However, they may benefit from occasional fertilization with a balanced aquatic plant fertilizer.
  5. Harvesting: American Lotus typically takes two to three years to mature and produce flowers. Harvesting can be done by collecting the seeds when the seed pods have turned brown and started to dry out. The seeds can be stored and used for consumption or planting in the following season.

Uses for American Lotus:

Medicinal Uses and Benefits:

  • American Lotus has been used in traditional medicine for various purposes. The roots were believed to have astringent properties and were used to treat diarrhea, dysentery, and other gastrointestinal issues.
  • Additionally, extracts from different parts of the plant have been studied for their potential antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties.
  • Some herbalists also recommend American Lotus as a natural remedy for anxiety and stress due to its calming effects.
