To make American Beautyberry insect repellent, you can steep fresh or dried leaves in hot water or an alcohol base.For the water method, steep leaves for several hours or overnight, then strain and add witch hazel for a skin-safe spray. For the alcohol method, soak leaves in vodka or rubbing alcohol for a few days, then strain and use the green liquid as is or add essential oils for scent. You can also simply rub fresh leaves directly on your skin for immediate, though temporary, protection.

Scientific studies have confirmed that American Beautyberry leaves contain compounds that repel mosquitoes, ticks, and fire ants.
The alcohol extraction method can leave a slight green tint on the skin or clothes due to the extracted chlorophyll, but it is usually washable.
Store the repellent in spray bottles in a cool, dark place.
